Purpose
The purpose of Boiler Green Initiative is to promote the establishment of Green Roofs on Purdue’s campus including the conversion of existing buildings to Green Roof systems and suggesting that all new buildings added to campus are designed with Green Roofs.  Other purposes of the club are to promote a more sustainable campus.  We are currently focusing on improving campus recycling practices, and the use of alternate transportation.  In the future, we plan on having Purdue represent how campuses across the nation can implement these practices to lower energy costs, reduce storm water runoff, and promote more environmentally conscientious practices.

The Six Committees:
GR implementation/logistics/research
We focus on researching which roof(s) we will outfit with a green roof. This group is figuring out the specifications for our green roof, the company we want to use and preliminary budgets.

Grant Writing
The people in this group are finding appropriate grants and writing up the documentation to apply for these grants. Right now they are focusing on grants to pay for Purdue University's first Green Roof. After that they will focus obtaining funds to pay for additional recycling bins on campus and other projects.

Green Roof Monitoring
This group's purpose is to obtain and install equipment to record information on the building(s) which will be outfitted with green roofs. We hope to monitor inside and outside temperature, rainfall quantity and quality, and meter the energy usage of the building(s).

Recycling Implementation/Education
We focus on increasing recycling usage on campus and in the communities of West Lafayette and Lafayette through education, adding to the number of bins on campus. The group is compiling information on the many benefits of recycling and the club will distribute the pamphlets during the first week of school. This group is also creating a survey to learn more about recycling habits of students, faculty and staff at Purdue.

Alternate Transportation Week
The Boiler Green Initiative is organizing an 'Alternate Transportation Week' for Purdue University students, staff and faculty the week of September 17 through 21. Our goal is for event participants to utilize modes of transportation other than their car to and from work for one week. By creating awareness of the accessibility of buses, health benefits of walking or biking, and the gas and thus cost savings resulting from carpooling, the participants may make alternate modes of transportation a regular part of their routine. A packet of information will be provided to all participants on the previously mentioned benefits of utilizing alternative modes of transportation as well as the associated environmental benefits.

Fundraising and Public Relations
Our group's goals include finding options to raise money for the club such as holding bake sales during Spring Fest and creating awareness for the club through securing interviews in the Exponent or the Journal and Courier. We are also in charge of organizing activities for the club like movie or bowling nights.

Light and Air Conditioning Sensors
The club is trying to implement light and Air Conditioning occupancy sensors so that less energy is used when rooms aren't in use on campus.

Alternative Pavement
We are investigating the types of pavements appropriate for use in the cold climate of the Midwest which would decrease surface water runoff among other benefits.
